Tonight, June 28, it'll be over 50 years since the 1969 Stonewall riots happened which is actually reason we celebrate Pride Month in June—to commemorate those who resisted and rioted in order to send a clear message to police and the community. After years of constant harassment, it is no wonder compliance was not an option as their frustration with the status quo had become too overwhelming. Only a year later in 1970, a committee was founded and the phrase "gay pride" was coined! Committee member L. Craig Schoonmaker created the phrase and shared in a 2015 interview with Helen Zaltzman that "anyone can have pride in themselves, and that would make them happier people, and produce the movement to produce change." We’ve highlighted some of the many different designs representing the diversity of the #LGBTQ communities. ➡️ 1️⃣ Progress Pride flag: This Pride flag builds upon Gilbert Baker’s original rainbow flag. It includes the trans flag colors, as well as brown and black stripes to recognize the lives of LGBTQ people of color and people affected by HIV/AIDS. 2️⃣ Rainbow flag: Designed by Baker in 1978 to celebrate #LGBTQ people and represent, in his words, the “rainbow of humanity.” The initial version had eight colors but was reduced to six after Baker faced a shortage of hot pink fabric and the turquoise and indigo stripes were replaced with blue. 3️⃣ #TransPride flag: Created by trans woman and US Navy veteran Monica Helms in 1999, the flag features light blue, pink, and white, which Helms has said reflects neutral or undefined gender. 4️⃣ #Nonbinary #Prideflag: The nonbinary flag was designed to build upon the groups represented in Marilyn Roxie’s 2011 #genderqueer flag. It represents genders that exist outside the male-female gender binary. 5️⃣ Intersex flag: According to @intersexaus, the flag’s circle symbolizes “wholeness and completeness,” while yellow and purple have long been considered colors associated with intersex identity. 6️⃣#BiPride flag: Designed by Michael Page in 1998, the colors of the bisexual pride flag were designed so “the purple pixels of color blend unnoticeably into both the pink and blue.” 7️⃣#LesbianPride flag: This flag has changed many times over the years, but this is currently the most commonly used and recognized flag for the lesbian community, redesigned by Emily Gwen in 2018. These are just some of the Pride flags developed to highlight different communities under the LGBTQ umbrella. As part of our community efforts, we were honored to design and build a new website for the @coastalbendpridecenter. The organization provides much-needed resources to our region as an LGBTQIA+ Community Center serving all 12 counties. The recently launched website represents the year-round community impacts and the Center's vast array of programs for youth, professionals, and more.
